Talk with experts

I have talked with experts work and study about psychology in the United States, Australia and China, After talk, I learned that cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most commonly used in psychotherapy. Two key points in the dialogue helped me a lot:

  1. The balance and change of behavior, cognition, and emotion are a reference for weighing related issues from the perspective of psychology.
  2. Treatment and thinking require that the patient has firstly developed a willingness to ask for help and is willing to change himself.

This exchange has given me a lot of inspiration for the focus of collecting feedback. Because the previous questionnaire is not perfect, I may need to go back to ask users about this part, and psychology itself also highly respects one-to-one in-depth communication, so I think Questionnaires alone are indeed not enough.

Regarding the need to let the audience take the initiative to have the willing, I designed the narrative to try to mobilize that. It is effective, but I need to do more on that.

Secondly, the psychologist mentioned that the premise of people’s psychological consultation is to take the initiative to consult, and arousing the consciousness of people who don’t want to solve the problem may not have much to do with psychology itself. I am also aware of this problem, but the futurology and sociology (one-dimensional man) I have studied before can better supplement this point. This allowed me to understand better the meaning of incorporating more disciplines into the project.

Regarding evaluation, psychologists suggested that we should pay attention to the emotional changes of the audience, and the experts believe that the main focus of my project is whether to reflect, so whether to produce thinking and emotional changes have become the focus of evaluation.

From the previous few feedbacks, one stakeholder has gotten a positive way of understanding the problem and generally agrees with the thinking brought about by the background of the story. This is a good start, and we must continue to pay attention to it later. I will entrust the person introducing the stakeholders to ask about these two feelings of the stakeholders.

On December 3rd, I will communicate with a psychology professor in UK. I am very grateful that experts are willing to help me improve.

intervention of room I (2) and some feedback

The offline target audience I found this time are recommended by the people around me, they are all work from home and has different degree of anxious, I let people using their most familiar language to write because this could make them free and show more imagination.

some feedback picutres

I also asked 4 psychology experts about my project , two of them said that this project is very interesting, and the other two will continue to communicate in the next week, really thanks for their help, I also find that it’s really easier to attract experts with the creative ideas, better than before’s only prepare questions to ask.

About last intervention post’s feedback: The video and manual solve some of the problem of repeated communication before, also, the website planning is very good to be a guide.

Here’s some new feedback from stakeholders( 6 test until now)

Advantage:

  1. This project looks interesting and attractive
  2. The video could bring more relax feeling.
  3. It brings positive feeling and thinking way
  4. The narrative part worked good, bring more thinking

Problems:

  1. There are many elements, some-people afraid that this will use lot of time when first get the kit (but it’s not!), the manual could makes people pay more attention to details, worked better than video, such as “2070”.
  2. Background music and reading sometimes distract people from the content of the video.
  3. The interactive part does not seem to be so effective at the moment.

About the question 3, I have already changed a little of the introduction of the deep ocean part, add some narrative, try to make the interactive more interesting. It is clearly stated that this is a deep-sea survival design and the role of the oxygen cylinder in the sentence. What needs to be clear here is that the oxygen cylinder is only an energy supply, not a lifebuoy. I hope people can make this clear and discover the solution in a positive way, instead of getting it directly.

About 2, actually I learned some form meditation’s podcast, but after the feedback I also realised that their content is sometimes not the most important, because they use sound and music to have the same relaxing effect, and when I want everyone to pay attention to the content itself, other factors should be appropriately reduced. Therefore, how to balance the sense of relaxation and narrative content in mental healing videos is a point that needs to be considered.

About 1, I really realised that my project try to get so lot things together, although all things are simple but with narrative it changed little complex? From the audience’s point of paying more attention to the details in the manual, I realized the impact of the popularity of fragmented information dissemination on the way people receive information now, but I must admit that the fragmented dissemination of information can make all content available. Better emphasis. So there are currently two options. One is to split the existing content, such as spreading the project in three or four parts, each of which does not exceed 40s. This idea currently seems to be more feasible. Another is to try to study the coherence of narrative?

In short, there are still many prospects for this project to be developed. The interest and recognition from the experts of the project has indeed given me a lot of encouragement, and the diversified development directions that can be envisaged have also given me a lot of motivation.

Video and website

I wrote the lines of the video and recorded it last week, but because many of the kit’s things are still in progress, I didn’t continue to make the video until today. Here I think of a problem that was not mentioned before; The content of the project is a bit too much, which will make some people find it complicated. I hope that the video can better connect the project and make it coherent through narration.

here’s the link of it:

11.22update: new version ,changed the background sound, this more peaceful:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/11PnV1H76FczZPAu0W-Y-qbSl5LgZM0GP/view?usp=sharing

It is still in its rudimentary state regarding the website, but I will try to design more and add videos to it on Monday .It could also work for the online intervention, to get more feedback and help more stakeholders.

linke: www.welcometoroomi.com

I actually have a lot of experience putting narrative into a design project and learned a scriptwriting summer course regarding the narrative part. I still try to observe as less speech and description as possible in this project. But the narrative part is the current problem; at the same time, I also realized that incorporating narrative into the mental health-related design content is very worthwhile.

I borrowed two books about narrative from the library; the upper one is mentioned narrative and mind and transmedia in the first and second sections; I need to learn from it.

intervention of room I (1)

How can transmedia narrative design provoke remote teleworkers to have more self-awareness and thought about stress and anxiety

After redesigning, I reprinted a brand new “ROOM I”. In addition to the brand itself mentioned earlier, I redesigned the map for “board games” to make it more interesting. The following is the latest design after printed.

About the stakeholders

Since the positioning of homeworkers was not completely clear before, nowadays, with good technological development and popularization, everyone is surrounded by electronic equipment and information. The situation is interlinked, so cognitive problems are widespread. . This is a social problem, not a personal problem.

Secondly, work from home requires a strong network and technological support, so people suitable for work from home will face varying degrees of technology and information impact. This is a question that needs to be considered by all home workers. People who have no problems will pay attention to the issues to avoid them in the future, while those who have issues can start to adjust.

If there is a blind spot in my project, it’s like: a home worker does not have a mobile phone or a computer and does not read books or newspapers. This situation may be very special, so I did not consider it.

So my target audience is people who work from home, if I have to say something specifically: people who work from home use technology products for work or leisure.

But to facilitate the implementation of the experiment, the target audience of my experiment is home workers in London. There are no national or ethnic restrictions. Everyone is in a highly information-based and high-tech city. And I will choose the delivery method to send the project to the participants and develop a web version to facilitate more people to experience it.

Here are the steps to use:

  1. Understand the project background story
  2. Feel the positive state through smile and mirror.
  3. Relax yourself through the relaxing board
  4. Rethink through “friendly sea”

While making the narrative video, I also made a narrative manual, I hope this manual can better guide my stakeholders.

How to get feedback

After that, I created two forms to compare the changes after stakeholders tried to experience the project. I invited friends to recommend some stakeholders that met my project requirements and started the intervention.

After I found four users and tried the first day, I found several problems

  1. The step of printing photos is very complicated, I need to think about alternatives.
  2. The project is sometimes difficult to accurately convey what I want people to do, and my follow-up explanation will take a lot of time.

Regarding the second point, I am trying to incorporate narrative storytelling into the project, instead of explicitly giving out the same detailed content as the product manual. This attempt does require more reference to related theories.

In short, I need to complete the video and find more people to test the video on Monday. At the same time, I also started the online version of the project, hoping to test more stakeholders. The questionnaire also needs to be revised, and more conclusions need to be combined with the questionnaire on the last day.

Secondary Research: Futures studies Narrative and and transmedia

I referenced the article:
https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/67587

The field of my investigation is about the influence of narrative and communication design on self-communication and reflection in anxious state, while the article focuses on narrative and meditation, which has a lot of closeness to my project. Among them, 3.5.5 talks about the conflict with the future,

3.5.5 Conflict with the future

There is a conflict in the form of concern about an event in the future. Since it has not happened, it is a conflict focused on suffering, and not on the pain that is a present ailment.

This point provides good support for my future and science fiction ideas. My use of the future perspective comes from the theory of speculative design because speculative design mentions future issues and thinking from the future perspective in some parts. And 3.5 .5 is the meaning of the future perspective from my specific problem. The problem is not the present, so if I want everyone to pay attention to it and map the future, I may need to refer to some science fiction and futurology here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futures_studies

Futurology Part

I have learned some futuristic content in the previous courses. I looked through the previous lectures, which mentioned three reasons people study the future, curiosity, predicting danger, and criticizing the present. I think my project fits this setting very well, but it is not enough for curiosity and exploration. I used to think about unclearly revealing the background of the story in the future, but when I realized that people would be more curious about the future, I should emphasize the future setting instead.

https://storyfieldteam.pbworks.com/f/the-image-of-the-future.pdf

Page 125 to 142 of this book mentions the inspiration of a utopian future vision for modern times and some unforeseen problems its over-idealism may cause. My project focuses on the issue of future, but it is not a dystopia, but prevention of some future situations. There is no perfect future, but we can try to find a balance. There is also an introduction to the enlightenment and prediction of futurology in Encyclopedia Britannica.

Transmedia

https://www.hse.ru/data/2016/03/15/1127638366/Henry%20Jenkins%20Convergence%20culture%20where%20old%20and%20new%20media%20collide%20%202006.pdf

Regarding the transmedia narrative part, I found that people are more studying its commercial value and fully connected with fan culture and the market. It is generally believed that a transmedia narrative will inspire fans and audiences to write new stories. In fact, I think This is an excellent interaction, but based on the background of my story, it is difficult for everyone to think more divergently about the story itself. The necessity of this point remains to be discussed.

But at the same time, I also found that transmedia narratives will strengthen people’s sense of participation in the project. People will have a more profound memory of the options selected during the project, which can be very good with the previous research. Combine. The audiovisual immersion that video can bring is different from the flipping and pen recording experience of paper media. Fusion will be an excellent attempt.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/ref/10.1080/02560046.2013.766977?scroll=top

Narrative

The narrative itself is actually the core of my project, and my project itself is about cognition. For this I refer to Narrative theory and Cognitive sciences.

It mentioned the transformation of internal narrative and external narrative. Internal narrative refers to dreams, inner activities, etc., while movie conversations are external narratives. When people write down their inner feelings in a diary, internal changes in to exteranl. I haven’t thought about it before. In fact, the externalization of the internal narrative is also mentioned in narrative therapy. But this book mentions that this kind of transformation can be continuous. This is a very delicate metacognitive process.

The Death of the Author

I agree with Roland Bart’s theory, but cross-media narration can better convey the author’s original intention through continuous interaction and the transformation of internal and external narratives. At least readers will not appear opposite to the author’s interpretation., But this remains to be verified .

But in any case, from the perspective of narrative therapy, doctors and patients solve problems through communication through a shared narration process. My project will also be a process of co-narrative, which should better convey the author’s meaning to the audience.

After the research, lead to the final name of the project: How can transmedia narrative design provoke remote teleworkers to have more self-awareness and thought about stress and anxiety

Design works and feedback

link of pictures: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Gk4nMkzI6vsV_gvXWVCGmZugqUZTcdhm?usp=sharing

11.8

The following is the package mentioned before, which contains the mirror, realxing board, self journey (temporary), and reflection card.

(I don’t know why the picture can’t be uploaded temporarily, then upload it next time)

After the suit was made, I showed my stakeholders the appearance. One of them said that the “self adventure” brochure looked like the medical record book I used before, and I realized that I should make some creative adjustments. . Then I thought of Monopoly. I saw a similar design in the NHS before. It would be a better way to quit smoking and make a similar game map.

11.10

I started to try to design a new version of “self adventure.” After referring to some board games, I realized that using dice would increase participation and randomness. So I tried to integrate dice into the project. At first, I tried to design a The content of the map, you can look at the text wherever the dice is thrown, but I still can’t solve the problem of the rolling range of the dice, which is difficult to control. After that, I tried to think about how to use the simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of mathematics to create randomness, but this thing was immediately rejected by myself because I really couldn’t think of it, and it would increase the difficulty of the game for users. In the end, I decided to try to find a balance. Suddenly, I came up with a way to combine cards and map games. Cards can be numbered, and the map can spread the numbers, which is more conducive to finding. By using horizontal and vertical columns to lock the grid quickly. The way will be excellent; I think the idea is fantastic; I think I am mighty, I did not find any reference(book or article), I do not know whether I need to find for this part.

(I don’t know why the picture can’t be uploaded temporarily, then upload it next time)

After the real thing was printed out, I always felt that it didn’t look good, so I shared it with my stakeholders. Two people suggested that the paper was a bit thick. One of them suggested that the visual effect was too tight, and another suggested this logo. Looking too serious, I think this opinion is very reasonable, and I decided to modify it to find a more pleasant and friendly feeling.

11. 11

I think this logo is too scattered in elements, so I decided to reduce it appropriately. First, there are solid and hollow shapes. I think the solid style is more in line with the modern and even future (my project background) feeling, so I will make the letter part filled with color and cancel the stroke. After that, I tried to solve the iconic cross shape, but it couldn’t continue to exist on top of R. At this time, I started thinking about moving it to the letter I. The effect was not bad, but it looked like a tombstone, not a suitable joke for anxious people. So I started to rotate the cross shape. I suddenly thought about the seriousness that people said before; after turning the “+” to get the “x” shape, I realized that when the “x” is reduced. After removing the two legs, a heart shape”v” will be formed. I am delighted with the result. I immediately applied it, and the effect looked much better.

(I don’t know why the picture can’t be uploaded temporarily, then upload it next time)

When I showed this new design to everyone, everyone expressed unanimous approval.

Testing of “self advanture”:

After the test, I got the following feedback:

  1. It’s exciting; it feels like playing.
  2. Will feel comforted.
    Feedback to think about:
  3. The map’s design is not like a map; more interesting graphics may align with the setting.
  4. I feel that this is just comforting me and cannot solve the problem.

Regarding the design, I think it’s OK to modify it. It’s not difficult, but it just takes time and experimentation.

But as for whether he can solve the problem, I must say that it just can’t; this is a guide. I initially thought about adding more theological content to render the project itself, but I suddenly realized that this was against the original intention. If everyone hopes to solve the problem through my project, they are still thinking of solving their anxiety through external forces. It’s never wrong to solve anxiety through external forces, but my project is to help people find some ways to adjust themselves.

So after thinking, I will tell my stakeholders that my project cannot solve the problem, but I will put it after the “self-adventure” part. In short, it is a good beginning to give people a peaceful space for reflection. Secondly, I will tell people that this experiment requires repeated practice, this is not a one-off project.

Intervention: the narrative of communication design and people’s self-awareness

In the previous article, we talked about the future background setting and project name. So next will show some design content.

First of all, this will be a kit; the content is divided into guide, smile card, relaxing board, self-motivation book, and reflection (imagination) paper.

I will guide everyone into the future theme, let everyone relax physically by smiling and adjusting their breathing, relax psychologically through the relaxing board, and finally relax completely through random self-motivation and reflection papers.

In terms of time, I would like everyone to reflect at a fixed time every day. The relaxing board can still be used as a prop at any time, but the whole process is recommended to be carried out every night before going to bed or after work. It will be mandatory during the week-long test. Ask everyone to try every day. Compared with before, I no longer want to control everyone’s free time. I hope to try to cultivate everyone’s feelings for this kit and the impact of the narrative content on everyone, and then see if you can consciously form a habit so that you don’t get too much Relying on passive reminders; this is also in line with the project’s emphasis on self-thinking.

In actual use, people will use mirrors and pictures of their choice to paste on two boards. This manual process will also be a thinking and practical experience.

This package will be printed and distributed to several recently contacted people who work/study at home in London for testing. At the same time, it will also be distributed to several users of the last relaxing board experiment for iterative feedback.

At the same time, I will make a video of “Room I.” There will be a video version of the project guide and more specific descriptions of people’s conditions in the future. This kind of sci-fi narrative will arouse everyone’s interest and attention.

Personalised improvement of Oblique Strategies and background story

After the tutorial last week, I realized that other people’s methods are not as good as using their own for testing at this time. However, the previous testing also slightly innovated in the process, and some conclusions were drawn after the test. It also gave me some enlightenment, the most important of which still needs some preparation. Some anxious people can better calm down and participate in the experiment.

Regarding incorporating my content into Oblique Strategies, previous research has provided some more important keywords: nature, attention, technology, information, humor. So trying to merge these points will be a good choice. I mentioned before thinking about problems from the perspective of the future. Here I refer to Foucault’s archaeology. After thinking, I associate imagination with meditation. I think it’s easier for people in the past to enter the state of mindfulness brought about by meditation because people have a lot of time to feel everything around them and the meaning of life, which has more perceptual thinking and is not wholly rational. From this perspective, people who consider the future will be more rational, and the solitary emotional space will be further compressed. In 2019, I wrote a science fiction chronicle about future religions, in which I promoted big technology companies and artificial intelligence. So I think that this time I can try to use a similar setting to design a highly technologically advanced future where people’s imagination and imagination space are presented in the brain by the real scene provided by the “Brain implant” Destroyed, imagination has become something that people pursue and admire, just like the current meditation. This is an evolution from the collapse of thinking space to the collapse of imagination space.

In this context, people need more space for thinking and imagination. Technology is not a villain, but people cannot rely too much on it. As a result, the organization “ROOM I” I created was born. Use classic imagination and offline thinking to help people break away from the highly rational environment of information and technology and find some perceptual self-talk and encouragement.

Under this premise,” my Oblique Strategies” will combine more technology-related content, such as:

  1. Too many heatwaves online; get some ice
  2. Information bombing, quickly dodge!
  3. Will electronic dogs eat electronic bones?

These contents will try some humorous expression styles so that people feel relaxed when they see them. When I present these sentences to my stakeholder, everyone will think that they are witty words, which is reasonable and in line with my expectations, but One sentence is: the wind on the top of the mountain, feel it for yourself when you are offline. This sentence makes my stakeholder feel very comfortable and calm. It also reminds me of the long-researched attention shift theory, which is naturally a perfect carrier of soft charm, not only for relaxing board, but also in my version. It can continue to be reflected in the Oblique Strategies. After all, letting everyone write freely is also a process of imagination, so I have added a lot of content that is closely related to nature in these sentences.

I named this set of ” friendly sea” because it’s more like an information ocean, we are searching for the land to go out of it, so the “sentence” you could find in the sea will be the swimming ring, it will not tell you the way to go, but take one, all things will be easier.

An intervention about Oblique Strategies

I do some research about Oblique Strategies and find some online app or web could also do it, so I find four of my designer friends to test about it; I let people think about the problems that make them stressed and try Oblique Strategies and talk about their feelings.

Afterward, most people reported that it didn’t feel much, and some people thought it was interesting, but this was just for fun, and it didn’t make them feel more.

Later, after reading a lot of CBT and Narrative therapy-related content, I found that everyone would give very systematic guidance. I tried to introduce this kind of guidance into the strategy to make the whole process more specific. At the same time, I recalled the previous script. Before starting the class, the free writing advocated by the class teacher set a topic and write according to your feelings for five minutes. In my opinion, that process is a good reflection process, and I hope to try to integrate that feeling. I designed a simple boot process, which is divided into three steps in total:

  1. Ask a question that makes you feel stressed now
  2. Get help from the Oblique Strategies http://stoney.sb.org/eno/oblique.html
  3. Think and write down how this help could inspire you, could write anything you want

example:

  1. I don’t know how to confirm the search gap
  2. Mute and continue
  3. So, I should now eliminate outside noise, exclude other people’s interference, study the problem deeply, and discover with enthusiasm. Suppose I research only for the research gap; it will cause a very embarrassing and passive situation, so You must be in a state of enthusiastic exploration first so that others’ research will no longer be my obstacles. I will stand on top of other research results and could find more meaningful and in-depth topics.

After that, I send it to some of my stakeholders to test, here’s some feedback:

I learned from people’s feedback:

  1. The guidance help with the effect, making the process interesting and very comforting.
  2. He can only comfort me and cannot solve practical problems.
  3. It is difficult for me to calm down and do this test when I am impatient

Regarding the third point, I asked whether the guided interactive video can play a role, and the stakeholder agreed, so I think I will speed up the development of my guide video to cooperate with the project to perform better.

As of now, my project can be divided into two parts. The first part is video guidance, which will combine the column design mentioned before. First, let people calm down through the relaxing board, which combines some encouragement and advice, such as the above content.

And the second part is a book, this book is more for people to record their reflections, and the content of the relaxing board will be placed on the inner page of the book. This is more like a folder.

Communication’s evolution & the intervention’s content

This week I started to study how to present my works to everyone in practice better. Still, in the process, I always felt that my project was a bit too focused on the support of background subject theories and psychological theories, which made this project progress to the present without any Advancement in visualization and vision. But after I look back on the past, I realized that the focus of my project has never been to study the upgrade of visualization and presentation simply, but more importantly, the promotion of communication and experience. I hope that my project can give people a better understanding to help people understand Some obscure content.

Regarding the experience part, I asked some relevant people about their feelings about existing psychological counseling or anti-anxiety counseling videos. The following are some meaningful feedback:

  1. Video content sometimes lacks packaging and authority.
  2. Many videos have too much irrelevant information, such as personal introductions and backgrounds, and the core content is not direct enough.
  3. I often feel that it is enough to have a detailed text description that can be read directly, and the doctor’s appearance is not very meaningful.
  4. The talks are very general, unable to solve the problem, need a guide, like a video fitness class.

Regarding Viewpoint 123, I think we can try to streamline the content, set up “meaningful” doctors, and carry out a column package. For this package, I have seen a fascinating project that can be used as a reference.

https://ayabenron.com/venice-bienalle-2019/

Regarding point 4, my stakeholders need a more interactive experience, not just listening to a class. This is what I mentioned in the previous evaluation report.

At the same time, I researched the connection between anxiety, stress, and design, and I found a lot of valuable materials for reference.

But I think I still need to refer to some works or documents for the part of the humor, such as: what kind of humor is more appropriate for people in an anxiety-sensitive state.
